Rockstar Games has pulled back the curtain on one of the most anticipated parts of Grand Theft Auto VI: the weather. In Game Informer’s October cover story, released digitally on September 29, the studio confirmed that Leonida will be hit by tropical storms and hurricanes, and that the weather system has been rebuilt from the ground up.
The 14-page feature includes 12 new screenshots. It is the latest official information drop before GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Here is what we know.

Hurricanes and Tropical Storms Are Real
The headline detail is that Leonida’s weather isn’t limited to a rain shower or two. Game Informer’s coverage confirms that tropical storms and hurricanes can hit the state, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, thunder and lightning.
That fits the setting. Leonida is Rockstar’s take on Florida, and Vice City is its version of Miami. The magazine’s announcement said the studio built advanced systems to “simulate Florida’s less sunny weather phenomena,” a phrase that now clearly points to the storms and hurricanes confirmed in the full story.

Weather Is Local, Not Map-Wide
One of the most interesting changes is that the weather is localized. Instead of the whole map sharing one forecast, conditions can differ from one part of Leonida to another. Reports from the cover story also describe the weather as persistent, so conditions don’t simply flip off.
In practice, you might drive out of a downpour on the coast and into clearer skies inland, or watch a storm build over a distant region before it arrives. Rockstar describes the clouds as dynamic, and visible details such as persistent puddles and rainbows have been mentioned in coverage of the story.
This pairs naturally with the game’s structure. Leonida is split into six main regions, each with its own environments and activities. If you want a refresher on where those regions are, see our Locations guide and our breakdown of the GTA 6 map size.
A Significantly Upgraded Wind System
Wind is the quieter headline. Reports based on the cover story say GTA 6 has a significantly upgraded dynamic wind system, with detailed wind effects layered into the weather.
Rockstar hasn’t published a technical breakdown of what the wind affects. It is reasonable to expect it to influence visuals such as vegetation, debris and water, and it plays a clear role in the hurricane and tropical storm behavior described above. But that is inference. The studio has not confirmed specifics beyond the system being new and more detailed.
Why the Weather Matters for Wildlife and Activities
The same cover story also detailed Leonida’s wildlife, with more than 170 animal species, and a wide list of activities including base jumping, kayaking, scuba diving, jet skiing and racing.
It is natural to wonder how these systems connect. Weather could plausibly change how water activities feel or how wildlife looks and behaves on screen. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed any direct gameplay links, so treat those ideas as speculation for now. If you are planning ahead, our Vice City starter guide covers the basics of the city.
Why Rockstar Is Investing in Weather
The cover story also covers how Rockstar researched Miami and Florida to build what Game Informer calls the most culturally and aesthetically accurate world the studio has made. Florida weather is a defining part of that identity: sudden afternoon downpours, humidity, storm seasons and the constant threat of hurricanes.
By building the weather as a systemic feature rather than set dressing, Rockstar is signaling that Leonida should feel like a real place with its own climate and personality, not just a backdrop for missions.

What We Still Don’t Know
For all the new detail, several important questions remain open:
- Gameplay impact: It is not confirmed whether a hurricane can change how a mission plays, close roads or alter the world after it passes.
- Scripted or simulated: Rockstar hasn’t said whether storms are triggered by scripted events, by a simulation, or by a mix of both.
- Frequency: There is no word on how often hurricanes occur or whether players can predict them.
- Platform differences: Nothing has been said about whether the weather system behaves differently across consoles.
Part of the cover story is behind a paywall in some outlets’ reporting, and coverage varies, so some finer details may change as more people read the full piece. We will update this article as Rockstar shares more.
What to Expect Before Launch
The weather reveal arrives about seven weeks before launch. French magazine LOVE is also set to publish an issue dedicated to GTA 6 on October 5, with interview material from Rockstar’s leadership, so more details could follow soon. Pre-loading for digital pre-orders begins on November 12, a week before the November 19 release. Our release date and editions page has the latest on pricing and bonuses.
For now, the takeaway is simple: Leonida isn’t just sunny beaches and neon. Hurricanes, local storms and a new wind system look set to give the world a weather identity of its own.
