Jason Duval works as a drug runner out of the Leonida Keys, hauling product for veteran smuggler Brian Heder alongside his closest friend, Cal Hampton. He grew up surrounded by grifters and small-time crooks, and a troubled adolescence eventually pushed him into the Army — the first confirmed military background for a playable protagonist in the series’ history. It didn’t fully take. Jason found his way back into criminal work almost as soon as he was out, and now lives rent-free in a property Brian owns in Key Lento, on the condition that he keeps helping move the goods. Day to day, that means loading contraband onto planes at Brian’s Boat Works & Marina alongside Cal — steady, unglamorous work that pays the bills but never quite feels like the life he actually wants.
Rockstar’s own official description sums up his arc in a single line: “Jason wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder.” That gap between the future he hopes for and the one he keeps landing in in is the emotional engine driving his half of the story.
Everything shifts when he meets Lucia Caminos. Rockstar has consistently framed the two through Bonnie-and-Clyde language — two people who’ve always known the deck is stacked against them, pulled together and then pulled into a much bigger criminal conspiracy across the state of Leonida after an easy score goes wrong. Whatever Jason wanted before meeting her, it’s her he’s building toward now.
