Port Gellhorn was once a thriving vacation destination on the Leonida coast, the kind of place families used to drive out to for a cheap getaway. Those days are long gone — the strip malls sit half-empty, the old attractions are shut down, and the motels still standing rent by the week more often than the night.
What’s replaced the tourist money is grittier. Cheap liquor, painkillers, and truck-stop energy drinks have become the town’s real economy, and the area has a reputation for staying just as chaotic after dark as it looks in daylight.
Sitting along Leonida’s western coast, close to the industrial sprawl of Ambrosia, it’s a natural stop for anyone moving product — or trouble — up and down the state.
