GTA 6 Trailer 1 Breakdown: Every Detail From the Reveal That Broke the Internet

GTA 6's first trailer ran just 91 seconds and shattered every video game reveal record that existed. Here's everything it actually showed.

After more than a decade of waiting, Rockstar finally confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI was real with a trailer that ran just 1 minute and 31 seconds — and it still managed to break the internet. Here’s everything it actually revealed, plus the records it set along the way.

1. It dropped a day early because of a leak

The trailer was originally scheduled for December 5, 2023, but a low-quality, unauthorized copy leaked online roughly 16 hours ahead of that. Rockstar’s response was to release the real, high-quality version immediately — landing officially on December 4, 2023 instead.

2. Vice City’s grand return

For the first time since 2006’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Rockstar brought back its most iconic city — reimagined as a modern-day, present-tense version of Miami rather than a period piece. After years of rumors (including a 2022 Bloomberg report that first suggested the setting), this was the moment it became official.

3. Lucia Caminos, introduced behind bars

The trailer’s first real character beat is Lucia, shown locked up in a Leonida correctional facility. It’s a small detail, but it set the tone for her arc from the very first reveal — establishing her as someone starting the story at a genuine low point rather than already in control of her life.

4. Jason Duval gets his first glimpse

Jason appears in the trailer as well, though with far less focus than Lucia in this first reveal — Trailer 2, a year and a half later, would end up doing most of the heavy lifting on introducing him properly.

5. The state of Leonida, named for the first time

Beyond just Vice City, the trailer confirmed the game’s setting as the fictional state of Leonida — Rockstar’s take on Florida as a whole, not just one city. This was the first time the name had been used officially, closing the loop on years of fan speculation about the game’s scope.

6. A “2025” release window

The trailer closed with a release window of 2025, later clarified by Take-Two as a Fall 2025 target. It wouldn’t hold — GTA 6 has since been delayed twice, landing on its current November 19, 2026 date.

7. Zero gameplay — pure atmosphere

True to Rockstar’s usual playbook (the same approach used for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2’s reveals), the entire trailer was cinematic. No HUD, no mission structure, no gameplay UI of any kind — just tone-setting.

8. A genuine world record

Trailer 1 pulled in roughly 93 million YouTube views in its first 24 hours, breaking the previous record for a non-music-video debut (59.4 million, held by MrBeast) and earning an official Guinness World Record for the most-viewed video game trailer in 24 hours. Within its first year, it climbed past 200 million views.

9. The teaser that preceded it also went viral

Before the trailer itself, Rockstar posted a minimalist teaser image on X — a sunset scene with purple palm trees and three birds in the distance. That single post pulled in over 1.9 million likes and became one of the most-liked gaming posts ever made on the platform.

10. Fans immediately started digging through the background

Even in 91 seconds, eagle-eyed viewers picked apart every frame — including a background detail showing a “RIP Rudi” memorial post, hinting at a character who’d died before the story even begins. That kind of environmental storytelling became a hallmark of how Rockstar would keep revealing Leonida in the trailers that followed.
